Boiler Upgrade Scheme explained

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is the grant an installer claims for a heat pump in England or Wales. The usual amount is £7,500. Oil and LPG homes can be £9,000 until 31 March 2027.

Key takeaways

  • Air-to-water and ground or water source heat pumps are £7,500 on the grant values notice.
  • Oil and LPG replacements with those heat pumps are £9,000 from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027. Coal is listed at £7,500.
  • Air-to-air is £2,500. Biomass is £5,000. A hybrid system is not a grant category.
  • You do not apply yourself. A certified installer applies, and Ofgem decides.

What the scheme is

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a grant towards a low-carbon heating system in England and Wales. Ofgem runs the applications. The installer takes the grant off the quote, so you do not receive a separate payment. The Ofgem property owner page sets out the amounts homeowners see, and the GOV.UK values notice is the category-by-category list, updated 29 September 2026.

This site is a guide to those published rules. It does not issue vouchers, and it is not a scheme website. Start with the heat pump grant eligibility checker if you want the amount that matches your fuel and the machine you want.

The amounts

£7,500 is the standard grant for an air-to-water heat pump or a ground source heat pump, including water source and shared ground loops. £2,500 is the air-to-air grant, including where the home is off the gas grid. £5,000 is the biomass boiler grant, and biomass is only for limited cases.

£9,000 applies where the property is off the gas grid and the heat pump is air-to-water or ground source, and the system being replaced is oil or LPG. The values notice lists coal, electric heating and other fossil fuels at £7,500 for those same heat pumps. The higher amount runs from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027. After that date the pages on this site should describe £7,500 as the continuing grant.

What to read next

Read how the grant works for the path from quote to decision, and how an installer applies for who sends the form. Grants by country sends Scotland to Home Energy Scotland.

If you want the money question, use the net cost estimator. It only prices air-to-water installs, because that is the range we can tie to published figures.
