Looks eligible to apply

£9,000

An off-gas home replacing oil with an air-to-water heat pump is in the £9,000 category from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027. After that date the standard grant is £7,500.

A typical air-to-water install is often quoted around £10,000 to £16,000 before the grant, so the amount after a £9,000 grant would commonly sit around £1,000 to £7,000. That is a published range, not your quote.

Oil compared with coal

Both fuels are off the gas grid. The grant values notice does not treat them the same when the replacement is an air-to-water or ground source heat pump.

An oil home and a coal home can both be off the gas grid and still sit on different grant rows. The checker follows the notice, not a single off-gas label.

What the uplift is

From 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027, the approved values notice sets a £9,000 grant for an air-to-water or ground source heat pump that replaces oil or LPG. The standard grant for other air-to-water and ground source replacements is £7,500.

The full scheme rules are on the Boiler Upgrade Scheme guide. Coal is explained on its own page because it is the off-gas fuel that does not move to £9,000.

Fuel and heat pump

The higher amount needs both the right fuel and the right heat pump. Either one on its own is not enough.

Who the higher grant is for

Check the higher row if

  • The home is in England or Wales.
  • The current fuel is oil or LPG.
  • The quote is for air-to-water or ground source, inside the dated window.

Do not assume the higher row if

  • The fuel is coal, mains gas or electric.
  • The heat pump is air-to-air or a hybrid.
  • You rent the home. The owner is the one the installer applies for.

The dated window

The £9,000 category starts on 21 July 2026 and runs to 31 March 2027. A coal replacement does not enter that category on the values notice we checked on 19 October 2026. After the end date, describe the standard £7,500 grant unless a newer notice changes it. The coal grant page keeps that split in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Does every off-gas home get the higher grant?

No. On the grant values notice, the £9,000 category is oil or LPG replaced by an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027. Coal is listed at £7,500.

Does the higher grant apply to air-to-air?

No. Air-to-air stays at £2,500 on oil, LPG and coal.

What happens after 31 March 2027?

The notice dates the £9,000 category to 31 March 2027. After that date this site describes the standard £7,500 grant unless a later notice says otherwise.
