Heat pump grant for gas boiler homes

If the home is on mains gas, the air-to-water or ground source grant is £7,500. A capped or clamped gas supply can still count as being on gas.

Key takeaways

  • £7,500 for air-to-water or ground source.
  • The £9,000 category is not for mains gas.
  • A hybrid that keeps the gas boiler is excluded.

Looks eligible to apply

£7,500

An air-to-water heat pump in England or Wales is the standard £7,500 grant when the £9,000 oil and LPG category does not apply.

A typical air-to-water install is often quoted around £10,000 to £16,000 before the grant, so the amount after a £7,500 grant would commonly sit around £2,500 to £8,500. That is a published range, not your quote.

Amounts come from the GOV.UK grant values notice and the Ofgem property owner page. This is a guide, not a decision. Your installer applies and Ofgem decides.

The amount

Ofgem’s installer guidance says a property is not off the gas grid if it is fuelled by mains gas, and that a capped or clamped supply still counts as mains gas. Those homes are outside the £9,000 oil and LPG category. The values notice puts an air-to-water or ground source heat pump that is not in an off-gas property at £7,500.

Air-to-air on gas is £2,500. There is no extra uplift to add.

What people pay

A typical air-to-water installation is often quoted around £10,000 to £16,000 before the grant, which leaves about £2,500 to £8,500 after £7,500. That range is explained on the cost guide. It is not a quote for a three-bed house in particular. We do not have a sourced bedroom split.

Running cost against gas is not on this site yet. We will only publish it with sourced tariffs.

Next step

If you are sure the boiler is mains gas, stay on this amount. If the home has no gas meter and runs on oil or LPG, switch to the off-gas guide. A village with a gas main at the end of the lane is not automatically an off-gas house.

The checker above is pre-filled for gas. Change the heat pump type if you are looking at air-to-air.
