Heat pump grant for electric heating

Storage heaters and other electric heating are not the oil and LPG uplift. The values notice lists them at £7,500 for air-to-water and ground source.

Key takeaways

  • Electric heating that is not a heat pump has its own rows.
  • Those air-to-water and ground source rows are £7,500, on or off the gas grid.
  • Already having a heat pump is a different question, and we do not treat it as a fresh grant.

Looks eligible to apply

£7,500

An air-to-water heat pump in England or Wales is the standard £7,500 grant when the £9,000 oil and LPG category does not apply.

A typical air-to-water install is often quoted around £10,000 to £16,000 before the grant, so the amount after a £7,500 grant would commonly sit around £2,500 to £8,500. That is a published range, not your quote.

Amounts come from the GOV.UK grant values notice and the Ofgem property owner page. This is a guide, not a decision. Your installer applies and Ofgem decides.

The amount

The values notice has a row for an air-to-water heat pump replacing electric heating that is not a heat pump, including in an off-gas property. The value is £7,500. The ground source row is the same. Air-to-air is £2,500.

Being off the gas grid is not enough for £9,000. The heating being replaced has to be oil or LPG as well.

If you already have a heat pump

The electric rows exclude a heat pump that is already there. Replacing one heat pump with another is not described as the electric-heating grant. Ask the installer to show which category they intend to use, and expect a refusal if the home already has a funded system.

Solar panels do not, by themselves, create or cancel this grant. We have not published a combined solar-and-heat-pump page.

Cost

The same air-to-water range applies: about £10,000 to £16,000 before the grant and about £2,500 to £8,500 after £7,500. Homes that already have radiators and a cylinder may sit at the lower end. Homes that need both may not. The quote is the only figure that counts.

We are not publishing a running-cost comparison against night storage heaters until the tariffs are sourced.
